Words Their Way

Words Their Way is a teacher-directed, student-centred approach to vocabulary growth and spelling development whereby students engage in a variety of sound, pattern and meaning activities, sorting pictures and words. It caters for differentiated learning in the classroom, rather than a one-size-fits-all solution.

The Words Their Way: A Practical Classroom Approach to Word Study workshop aims to provide you with an overview of recommended best practices, tips, and techniques for using Words Their Way, as well as providing you with a 5 step approach to implementing the resource effectively.

Learn how to effectively use Words Their Way to assess and identify the spelling stages of your students, tailor spelling activities to support students in their spelling development, and create a positive approach to the teaching and learning of spelling.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this workshop, participants should be able to:

  • Understand how Words Their Way supports the teaching of spelling in the Australian Curriculum: English.
  • Analyse student data using the spelling inventories.
  • Plan and organise for daily word work using Words Their Way.
  • Apply practical approaches for the successful implementation of Words Their Way in classrooms.

Completing the Words Their Way: A Practical Classroom Approach to Word Study workshop will contribute 5 hours of QTC Registered PD addressing the following Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW. This course is also accredited by TQI for ACT-based teachers. Accreditation is processed after completion of the workshop and only upon request.

 

Victorian Educators: Aspects of this workshop address AITSL Standard 1.5, which can be applied to the professional learning requirements outlined in the VIT’s Special Needs Plan.

This workshop addresses the following AITSL Standards:
