The Brain for Allied Health Professionals

This workshop describes the processing of human information from first stimulus to conscious feelings and cognition, tracking the flow of information from the outside world into the deepest recesses of the brain.

Description

The aim of this workshop is to introduce the participants to the brain’s functional structures and neurotransmitters in an easy to understand format, as well as explain how the structure and function produces human behaviour, and how this can be measured in terms of real constructs, for instance, information processing, decisional acuity, non-conscious emotional bias, speed and accuracy.

The way information is processed is clearly explained, including emotions, feelings, cognition, and then the executive functions, with clear definitions for each aspect of higher functioning. The nature of various sources of damage and how to assess the outcome from a clinical psychological point of view will include (briefly) alcohol changes, depression and its physical components, traumatic brain injury and the dementias.

The nature of how the brain then makes decisions, is motivated, and influenced by non-conscious biases will become clear, and interventions to change this and create a more positive being will become clear.

The evolution of the human brain will be clearly explained, including the evolution of speech and thought, and how this influences psychological interventions in practice.

Mention will be made of the common medications for intervention in mood, anxiety, personality and psychotic disorders and why they commonly fail.

An introduction to biological psychiatry, the reward mechanisms of the neurotransmitters in addiction, the dangers of street drugs and alcohol, the reading of MRI scans etc will all be touched on.

A special section will refer to healthy ageing in the brain, and the seven domains to assist clients in improving the body-brain outcomes in ageing will also be a focus of this workshop, and the impact of exercise, socializing, loneliness, complex movement, and motivational enhancement of healthy behaviour change will also be included.
